When I was five, I would tell anyone who would stand still long enough to listen that I was going to college because, I would be a teacher. I remember riding in the car with my parents and counting, â€Å"Only nine more years,† showing them the number nine using two small hands. There was never a question in my mind, I would go to college and I would be a teacher. Life in my house was at times an adventure and at other times a misadventure. Deep in the throes of a misadventure and while pregnant with my youngest brother Zach, my mother was unwittingly poisoned. Unfortunately, Zach was born with several physical and intellectual disabilities. One significant issue was amblyopia, also known as lazy eye. Surgery corrected the cosmetic issue around the age of 4, but he would never see out of both eyes simultaneously, only one or the other. First grade was rough for Zach, involving the diagnosis of significant learning disabilities, including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorde r, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, and Dysgraphia. Writing, reading, memorizing, retaining new information, paying attention, and math of any kind seemed impossible for my brother. His teachers spent most of the class time controlling his behavior. Unsuccessfully, our parents tried everything within their power to help him. Sadly, it wasn’t long before his teachers threw in the towel, labeled him un-teachable, and made it clear there was nothing more they could do. The id works on the pleasure principle, the ego works on the reality principle and the superego works on the mortality principle. Problems arise when there is a clash between these three different elements. The psychoanalysis is that many mental problems are caused by the unconscious factors and repressed material. So the main aim of the therapy is to uncover this repressed material. Once uncovered, clients are able to release the power it has over their behaviour (e. g. causes their mental illness). This is called catharsis. Free association, dream analysis, projective tests can be used. In the free association the client is encouraged to express their thoughts exactly as they come into their mind, even though they may seem irrelevant or inappropriate. The ego will attempt the censor what is said, but the free thinking allows previously unconscious thoughts to slip through and bring into consciousness memories what have been repressed. This releases the power it had over their behaviour- hence a talking cure. The dream analysis â€Å"the royal road to the unconscious†. The imagery of dreams is symbolic and the therapist identifies what the symbols mean and find out why they are causing anxiety. The fourth one I am going to explain the psychological approach of the application of the humanistic perspective to health and social care. This approach stresses the importance of how each individual views the world. Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers’s are key people Humanists believe that everyone is born good and worthwhile. From early childhood we begin to evaluate ourselves and our actions. A child quickly learns what other people value as a positive thing. Within this approach there is a Client-centered therapy (CCT) which came out in the (1950s) and they say it is an unconditional positive regard. Rogers wanted the individual at the centre of the therapy. A therapist using CCT must be accepting and non-judgemental always offering support, regardless of what the client says or does. By doing this the client will come to accept their own distortions and denials and own up to them. This enables the client to move towards a healthier personality by valuing themselves and not relying on others to provide love and acceptance in a conditional way. There is also a Person-centred therapy (PCT) which came out in the 1970s. Today people tend to refer to Humanistic therapy as PCT . It is still based on Rogers work. Therapists are facilitators (guides) who offer an atmosphere of freedom and support for the individual to become whole. The goal of the treatment is to become independent, spontaneous and confident. If change occurs then it is the client who makes it happen not the therapist. There are three therapist attitudes and they are, Genuineness – you are helping a real person. Unconditional positive regard: Must deeply and genuinely care for the client. Empathic understanding: Must clarify the emotional significance of the client’s response, not just the verbal. Roger’s daughter Natalie has pioneered person-centered expressive therapy (Rogers 1993) which incorporates movement, art, music, pottery, and creative writing, as well as essentially non-verbal channels of expression. The fifth one I am going to talk about is the application of the cognitive perspective. This approach is interested in how and when we learn both facts and skills. This approach looks at the way we think. We all have our own points of view about the world and everyone in it including ourselves. Sometimes our thoughts can become very negative and this can cause problems. This approach has generated Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. The cognitive behavioural therapy was developed by beck and the aim of this was o teach â€Å"clients† to rethink and challenge their negative perceptions/ cognitions. Becks cognitive therapy was in two stages the first stage was to get the therapist and the client to agree on the nature of the problem and give goals on therapy. Then stage two was for the therapist to challenge the client’s negative thoughts then the client engages in behaviour between sessions in an attempt to challenge these negative thoughts. The aim of this is for clients to release thoughts are irrational which their homework was and a diary was kept. The most common features of CBT are Client monitors their negative, automatic thoughts (cognitions), Client recognises the connection between cognitions, affect (mood) and behaviour, Client examines evidence for and against their distorted thoughts, Client learns to Substitute unrealistic cognitions for more realistic ones and Client learns to identify alter their beliefs that predispose them to distort their experiences. This therapy is further developed to include challenging behaviour too. This therapy usually is over 20 sessions over 16 weeks and homework is set to be used as thought catching e. g. in diary. The four basic assumptions of CBT are Response to life is based on interpretations of self world rather than what the actual case is, Thoughts, behaviour feelings are interrelated influence each other – none are more important than the others, Must clarify change the way they think about themselves world around them and Need to change cognitions and behaviour. CBT can help post traumatic stress, people who suffer from depression and victims of crime/abuse. Finally I am going to talk about the application of the biological perspective. There are lots of ways the biological approach can help individuals: understanding a childs development, understanding sleep patterns to help shift workers and understanding if there are any drug or surgical treatments for certain genetic/biological based problems. Psychologists have done a great deal of research into understanding why we sleep, and what our bodies are doing during sleep. There is a Circadian Rhythm: The sleep-waking cycle A circadian rhythm repeats in a cycle of once every 24 hours. The 24 hour sleep-waking cycle is a good example of a circadian rhythm because it clearly illustrates that circadian rhythms depend on a interaction of physiological and psychological processes. Our fairly consistent sleep pattern suggests an internal mechanism – the biological clock. However, this can be overridden by psychological factors, such as anxiety or shift work. Shift work sleep disorder (SWSD) is a sleep disorder that affects people who frequently rotate shifts or work at night. Schedules of these people go against the body’s natural Circadian rhythm, and individuals have difficulty adjusting to the different sleep and wake schedule. SWSD consists of a constant or recurrent pattern of sleep interruption that results in insomnia or excessive sleepiness. This disorder is common in people who work non-traditional hours, usually between 10:00 p. m. and 6:00 a. m. The symptoms of SWSD are insomnia and excessive sleepiness. Other symptoms of SWSD include: Difficulty concentrating, Headaches, Lack of energy. Not every shift worker suffers from SWSD. However, if you are a shift worker and experience any of these symptoms, you should talk to your doctor. I am going to choose the humanistic approach and the cognitive approach. The humanistic approach is patient centred and understands all individuals have different needs and these can change depending on the individual’s characteristics, health state and their moods the humanistic approach shows a lot of individualised care and looking mainly at the individuals themselves and how the care is meeting their set needs. The humanistic approach suggests behaviour is determined greatly by internal factors such as our emotions. The cognitive approach is based around the notion that if we want to know what makes the human mind function and why certain behaviour is displayed and then we need to understand the internal process of the mind. Cognitive psychology bases its focus on the way the human process information, it looks at how we use the information that we receive and how this leads to our behaviour. The cognitive approach refers to the human body as a machine. The similarities are that these are alike in terms of both theorists focusing on the promotion of positive self- acceptance and trying to discourage the user from negative thoughts and not to judge themselves on past encounters. Both theorists want the user to accept any failures or mistakes as a part of their life and not to let it affect other situations, and to process their mistakes to improve their coping strategies and the both approaches try and promote their user’s acceptance of who they are.

Many engineering technicians assist engineers and scientists, in research and development. Others work in production or inspection jobs. Industrial engineering technicians study the efficient use of personnel, materials, and machines in factories, stores, repair shops, and offices. They also prepare layouts of machinery and equipment, plan the flow of work, make statistical studies, and analyze production costs. Those in research and development build or set up equipment, prepare and conduct experiments, calculate and record results, and assist engineers in other ways. Those in manufacturing prepare specifications for materials, devise or run tests to ensure product quality, or study ways to improve efficiency. Industrial engineering technicians generally work for manufacturing companies and do most of their work with; electrical and electronic machinery and equipment, transportation equipment, and industrial machinery equipment. Industrial technicians must be able to work with charts , blueprints, layouts, graphs, diagrams and statistics. My uncle Jim has a job very similar to that of an Industrial Engineering Technologist. Jim works for a company named AMP Incorporated which is located in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Jim has been working at AMP for about four years and is the group leader of the second shift production team. Jim's job is to make sure that production in the plant runs smoothly, to repair machines, and to make sure that the other workers are doing what is needed. Jim has been promoted several times within the past few years and was originally hired by AMP as a temporary worker doing hand assembly. Jim went to Forsyth technical college and majored in Manufacturing Engineering Technology, which is a two year major. He went back to school shortly after he first began working for AMP. Jim said that he loves his job at AMP and enjoys the type of work that he is doing. He also told me that all of his co-workers are treated as equals and that they all work as a team. Each shift works in teams with each person being responsible for something. The MET major that Jim took is very similar to my major of Industrial Technology. Both of these majors deal with manufacturing and industrial sciences, and it is very possible that after graduating I will have a job very similar to my uncle's. The job my uncle has is one that requires the understanding of materials and processing. This type of knowledge is provided in an Industrial Technology major. Jim told me that the company is very good to its employees and supports an open door policy throughout the different levels of management. He seemed pleased with the benefits and medical coverage AMP provided, which to me seemed excellent. The workers at the plant seemed to work well together from what I saw during my visit. Each employee has their own station and specific jobs that they are required to do. The plant produces mostly electrical connectors used primarily in telephone applications, although other work is done in the plant and other AMP facilities. The parts that are produced are made of plastics, specially treated metals, and various other chemicals and laminar composites. Jim told me that the plant produces almost a billion of the more basic styles of connectors in a year. The plant was very impressive and seemed to go on forever in each direction. Many people believe that the power of nicotine has no effect on them, and think that they can stop at anytime;however, this is incorrect. If smoking continues, addiction usually develops before the smoker even realizes it; when this person tries to quit smoking, it is very difficult (N-O-T: Not on 1). One substance found in tobacco smoke, which can make it difficult to quit smoking is nicotine, a highly poisonous oily liquid that acts on the brain. It is poisonous,although, only in large amounts. Its poisonous properties make nicotine addiction very powerful. In 1988 the Surgeon General of the United States published a report concluding that nicotine in cigarettes is addicting inexactly the same sense as alcohol, cocaine, and heroin. Most former smokers have made at least one unsuccessful attempt to quit before finally succeeding, and many have to try several times, (Taylor 17). The quitting process is so hard vecause the body develops a dependency on the drug nicotine. This dependency is so great that people do not quit smoking even though they are aware that it may cost them their lives. Surprisingly, many smokers are aware of these statistics, but continue to risk theur lives anyway. These statistics are small compared to the number of people who suffer everyday because of smoking related illnesses. Thirty percent of all cancer deaths, according to the American Lung Association, are caused by smoking. Besides lung cancer, smokers also suffer from a number of other smoking related illnesses. The least significant effect that most smokers experience is smokers cough. Although smokers cough is not deadly , it is very painful and disgusting to others. It usually occurs early in the morning, because the smokers lungs are trying to cough up some of the harmful substances that have built up from the previous day of smoking. Many respiratory diseases are also attributed to smoking. These diseases occur because of bacteris growing in the lungs which makes it difficult for a persons immune system to fight viral infections. As a result, Smokers develop more flu, pneumonia, coughs, tuberculosis, and other breathing related problems than nonsmokers, (Troyer 33). Other potentially fatal diseases can result from smoking, such as cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular diseases are those that affect the heart and circulatory system, such as heart attacks, stroke, vascular disease, and aortic aneurysm, (34). With so many potentially fatal diseases attributed to smoking, smokers receive more than 1/2 of all medical care,(35). The effects of smoking are very costly to the economy. If the sale of cigarettes was banned the United States government would save billions of dollars each year. Opponents argue that banning the sale of cigarettes would eliminate nearly one million jobs in the tobacco industry, and rob the government of billions of dollars they receive from cigarette taxes. However, the truth is that each year 100 billion dollars is spent on somking related health care costs, which is twenty-three times greater than the amount that hte government receives from cigarette taxes. Most of these costs come from the cost of treating dieseases caused by tobacco and from the loss when workers are too ill (or have died) and cannot contribute to economic activity, (Taylor 17). if cigarettes were banned in the United States, the government could apend the money currently used to pay medical bills, on more necessary causes. Instead of this money being used for diseases which were knowingly brought upon by the smoker him or herslf, this money could be used in finding a cure for diseases that are not preventable. Perhaps the saddest effect of smoking is that on pregnant smokers and their babies. When pregnant women smoke, their babies are being forced to smoke, too. many women begin smoking at an early age and find it hard to quit even during pregnancy. Information given from Health Watch discribes smoking as a harmful gas and deadly substance thats passes throughout babys blood from mothers blood (2). This selfish act on the mothers part can result in miscarriage, stillborn (SIDS). When a pregnant woman smokes, the various chemicals, including nicotine and carbon monoxide , also affect the baby. These chemicals have a direcct effect on the growth of the fetus. The more the mother smokes during pregnancy, the lower the weight of the newborn infant. Smoking increased the risk(by more than 50% in light smokers and well over 100% in heavy smokers) taht the babys weight will be less than 2500 grams, (Tye 6). Such babies are more likely tio be stillborn, to need intensive care in the hospital, or to die in infancy. Not only does smoking gave dangerous and fatal effects on the baby, but the mother is at risk as well. The more a pregnant womean snokes, her risk of placenta abnormality and excessive bleeding increases. Also, nicotine may decrease mild production and make successful breast feeding more difficult, (Taylor 8). So if a mother would knowingly endanger her life and the life of the baby she is carrying, this woman would have no problem smoking in a room full of nonsmokers, endangering their lives as well. Many people who do not smoke so not enjoy being in a room where people are smoking. However, discomfort should be the least of their worries. Cigarette smoke carries carcinogens and other harmful substances. Many of these substances are poisons: tar, nicotine, carbon monoxide, arsenic, cyanide, and other deadly aubatances. Anyone exposed to secondhand smoke breathes in over four thousand chemical substances. Secondhand smoke kills 53,000 Americans each year. It is the third largest preventable cause of death . Only direct smoking and alcohol-related deaths rank higher,(Rumph 20). To demonstrate that nonsmokers are affected by the smoke, a study was done by the Americans for non Smokers Rights Foundation on children living in homes with parents who smoke. The study was compared with children living in homes with no smoking. The children living with smokers, had a ten percent lower amount of high density lipoprotein, which prevent against heart disease, as compared to children in non-smoking homes, (Rumph 20). Also, girls with parents who smoke have a lower ability to carry oxygen in the blood, while boys had a lower testosterone level than children living in non-smoking homes, (Houston 121). Although some progress has been made to reduce secondhand smoke in public places, it is not enough. There are no laws to protect people on the street or innocent children in their homes. The only way to protect innocent non-smokers is to ban the sale of cigarettes, so there would be no second-hand smike at all. Cigarettes are harmful to everyone. They result in addiction, fatal illnesses, birth complications, and death.
